Andrew Govan Campbell

                                                                                         

THE FAMILY OF ANDREW GOVAN & LULA BENNETT CAMPBELL

 

 

Andrew is the half-brother of Alfred Sidney Campbell.  Their mothers are sisters (Andrew’s mother is Clara Hunt and Alfred’s mother is Peggy Hunt) however, they purportedly share the same father.  On the Mississippi Census, they along with their mothers and siblings are listed as Binfords.  As to why or how they assumed the name of Campbell is to be researched.  Like many who were enslaved by people who governed this country, a family rumor links us to a US President and one of the signors of the Declaration of Independence. 

 

Andrew was born December of 1853 in Montgomery County (Carroll Co.), Mississippi.  In 1874 he married Lula Bennett [born January 1857 in Mississippi] and to this union the following sixteen children were born.

Lennie was born during December of 1874 in Montgomery County, MS  .  She married a Loden Walker in Cross County, AR and to this union two sons were born George [1893] and Esau “Dizzy” [1901] .   Her second marriage to Sam Edwards created seven sons.  They are Otis, Roy, Samuel, Otto, James Thomas “J.T.”, Ernest, and Ralph.

Virgil “Verde”Campbell

Virgil born during October of 1876 in Montgomery County, MS married a Bell.  [Researching for additional information]

 

John “Dank” Campbell

John “Dank” was born during April 1878 in Montgomery County, MS.  He married Lena Whitley and to this union six children are born.  They are Claudia, Violet, Louise [Happy}, Dorothy, Willena [Billie June], and Mary.

 

Alice Campbell Radcliff

Alice was born during 1879 in Montgomery County, MS.  She married a Radcliff and to this union three children were born.  They are McKinley, Theodore, and Juanita.\

 

Maggie Campbell Whitley

Maggie was born during May of 1882 in Montgomery County, MS.  She married James Whitley and to this union two children were born.  They are Ira [May 1901-1969] and Connie.

 

Connie Campbell
Connie was born during February 1887 Montgomery County, MS.  She married a Dobson and to this union three children were born.  They are Olaf, Pauline, and Armond.

 

Tillman Campbell

Tillman was born during March of 1885 in Montgomery County, MS and transitioned at an early age.  He is listed as Filman on the Arkansas 1900 Census.

 

Charles Campbell

Charles was born during September 1886 in Montgomery County, MS and transitioned at an early age.  His is listed as Chas on the Arkansas 1900 Census

 

Emma Campbell Moore

Emma was the first born in Cross County, Arkansas during December of 1888.  She married Dennis Moore and to this union ten children were born.  They are Lee Vertis, Alice, Regusta, Lucille [Hickey], Novella, Dennis, Betty, A.T., Dorothy, and a baby boy that transitioned at birth.

 

Dennis Campbell

Dennis was born in Cross County, Arkansas during November of 1891.  He married Minnie Rucker and to this union five children were born.  They are twins Ruth and Ruby, Andrew, Charles, and Dorty.  He is listed as James on the 1900 Arkansas census.

 

Minnie Campbell Miller

Minnie was born in Cross County, Arkansas during July of 1892.  She married Ruben Miller and to this union four children were born.  They are Juan Arthur Risco [Jay], Dinah [transitioned at birth], James, and Eugene.

 

Andrew “Bud” Campbell

Andrew was born in Cross County, Arkansas during January 1894.  He married Roxanne Rucker and to this union one son, Douglas Lee, was born.

Lula was born in Cross County, Arkansas during August of 1896.  The document titled “The Beginning of the Campbell Family” was provided by her family.  She married John Swanigan and to this union three children were born they are Beatrice, Wilma, and Bessie Louise [Penna]. 

 

Blonze Campbell

Blonze was born in Cross County, Arkansas during March of 1897.  According the document received during the 1992 reunion, he was married twice and further research is needed on the names.  Samuel and Hester [Nookie] are the names of his children.

 

Claude Campbell

Claude was born in Cross County, Arkansas during April of 1899.  He married Mabel and there is no children listed from this union.

 

Bessie Louise Campbell Chandler

Bessie was born in Cross County, Arkansas during 1904.  She married Jesse Chandler and to this union four children were born.  They are Marion, Sandra, Belinda, and Robert
